Dogpatch - Neighborhood Things To Do
∎
The Dogpatch neighborhood secured the 36th spot on Time Out's 2022 list of coolest neighborhoods in the world, thanks to its growing and thriving art scene. Once thought of as an industrial corner dominated by vast warehouses and factories, the Dogpatch is now home to some of the city's best restaurants and bars. And unlike a good deal of San Francisco, Dogpatch is relatively flat and is easily walkable, so all you'll need for a day out in this 'hood is a good pair of sneakers. It's also accessible by Muni light rail and Caltrain, making it an easy stop from other places in the city.
While the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and the de Young are some of the most famous museums in the city, the Dogpatch is home to some of the best places to see and experience contemporary, San Francisco-made art. The Institute of Contemporary Art is a great place to start your journey. The museum opened in Oct. 2022 and is home to an ever-changing selection of exhibitions. Each Saturday, there's a Children’s Studio, which offers a hands-on activity for kids centered around what the space is currently showing. Materials are provided, and all ages are welcomed. But the best part? Visiting the museum is free. On occasion, the Institute also shares its space with local food and beverage vendors who offer pop-ups.
Art lovers will also want to stop by the Minnesota Street Project, comprised of 15 independently owned art galleries at two different sites on Minnesota Street. Exhibits normally last for only a month or two, so there’s always something new to discover. Make sure to set aside time to grab a bite at the on-site restaurant, Besharam, which serves Indian dishes with a California twist.
Finally, the Museum of Craft and Design is another must-see in the Dogpatch. As the name suggests, the space hosts craft and design-focused exhibitions, ranging from an exploration of wool to interrogating our experience with scents. The museum also regularly hosts events; there's even a roving van that brings hands-on, creative pop-ups throughout the city. The museum's impressive shop is worth exploring on its own, offering jewelry, household goods, books, games and activities for kids.
If you're starting your time in the Dogpatch earlier in the day, an excellent first stop is Neighbor Bakehouse. The croissants at this spot have been beloved for years; owner Greg Mindel was even a semi-finalist in 2019 for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker. Menu items include delicious croissants and muffins, but also fresh-baked breads and specialties served throughout the weekend. The spot has done away with its espresso-based drinks but does serve drip coffee and tea if you need a pick-me-up.
For a slightly different breakfast option, Daily Driver is home to some of the city's best bagels (bonus: they're organic) cooked in a wood-fired oven and served with housemade butter or cream cheese. Visiting the neighborhood with cheese lovers? Check out the Dogpatch location of La Fromagerie, a local cheese shop with an outstanding selection of cheeses from all over the world as well as wine and charcuterie.
When you start getting hungry for brunch or lunch, head over to the Plant Café, which sources all of its organic ingredients from local farms (the spot has even been called the most sustainable San Francisco and Bay Area restaurant by the Nature Conservancy.) Menu items include salads, sandwiches, burgers and pasta, as well as Asian-inspired cuisine and other specials. There are also plenty of options for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans.
If you're looking for a great outdoor spot with a view, Mission Rock Resort is located right on the water and has an excellent bar menu as well as some delicious seafood mains. This spot is popular, and gets busy, so you’ll want to make a reservation if you’re coming for dinner. Mission Rock Resort also offers a mean happy hour, including discounted oysters, wine and frozen cocktails. If you're not in the mood for seafood, head over to Piccino, which sources many of its ingredients from its own farm in Healdsburg. The menu is "Italian-inspired California cuisine" and includes pizzas, pastas and other fare including local fish and pork. Note: Piccino also serves an inventive brunch, and has a sister bar next door.
Nearby, The Ramp is a Dogpatch institution. Located right on the water in an old tackle shop, this is a great place for visitors and locals alike to grab lunch, dinner or a drink while taking in views of the Bay. You can often score a table without planning ahead; menu items include everything from burgers to oysters. The Ramp regularly hosts events like salsa classes and live music, as well as DJs on select Friday nights. The spot also often stays open late after Warriors games and other Chase Center and Oracle Park events for folks who want to grab a late night drink or a snack.
If you love wine, you'll want to check out Ungrafted while in Dogpatch. The unique wine bar and bottle shop serves wine, beer, sake, cider, vermouth and non-alcoholic options. Drinks are offered alongside a constantly changing, farm-fresh food menu that’s overseen by David Avilesan, an award-winning chef.
